In which I’m down 13 pounds and apparently I love running now.

August 30th, 2011 | 14 comments | Getting Fit

So I weighed myself last week and I’m down 13 pounds. Which is almost halfway to my 30 pound goal. Which may eventually turn into a 40 pound goal but more on that later.

I’m not weighing myself this week because it’s that week (you’re welcome for the TMI) and I’m pretty sure that getting on the scale this week wouldn’t be productive for anyone, so I’ll check back in next week when I’m not bloated beyond recognition and all that jazz. Also, next week is my one-month follow up to my first doctor’s appointment, so that’s exciting.

In other news, I was working at the Chicago Triathlon Expo for CSC and seeing all these ridiculously fit people was a total inspiration overload. I mean, there were the people where you could totally tell they’re a triathlete because they’re so hot and toned and just LOOK like they enjoy all of the multisport activities that they dedicate their life to. And then there were all of these other people who, if I was being shallow and totally stereotypical, don’t look like triathletes. Which isn’t to say that I didn’t think they couldn’t do it, but more like “holy shit, anyone can be a triathlete.”

No, I’m not registering for a triathlon. Baby steps.

But I did register for the Bucktown 5k yesterday. Partly because Martha, one of the women that PROskydiving sponsored for a 5k earlier this summer, is running it and asked me to join. Also partly because the race packet includes a track jacket that is pretty sweet looking. But also because I’ve been working on this walking turned jogging turned running routine in the morning and it’s not THAT BAD and I think I could totally do it.

Can you say SNAZZY?

I registered yesterday and said “okay, the routine I do in the morning is a 5k, now I just need to work on running the whole thing instead of warming up, jogging, walking, jogging and walking again.”

Today I did my little warmup and then RAN THE WHOLE DAMN THING. I was going to do my warmup, then jog, then walk routine after I cross the major road and then run again when I get to the end of that street, but I just kept going. Originally I was thinking, “hmm, get to the first driveway then you can walk” but that turned into “okay I’m here but I’m not dying so let’s go for the next driveway” and then that turned into “okay looks like we’re going to run the whole damn thing” and guess what? I didn’t die!

Who am I and what did I do with my “I only run if I’m chased” counterpart? This is bananas!

So, all things considered, I’m OBSESSED with the iMapMyRun+ iPhone app. If you’re not familiar, it uses GPS to track your runs and time and pace and thus calories burned and IT’S LIKE I AM COMPETING WITH MYSELF and it’s totally awesome.

I also purchased a snazzy new pair of Brooks Glycerin 9′s at the Triathlon Expo. They’re so hot looking it’s stupid. And they’re totally comfortable, it’s like running on clouds, which is handy, considering my other obsession that has to do with the sky and things of that nature.

Badassery.

Nicole wrote a post today about how she’s training for a half marathon and she’s writing about her training and it’s okay if your topics change as you change and all that. I say hell yes.

Right. So skydiving and running seem to be the focus here now.

If you run and have an iPhone – what kind of case do you use? There are a bajillion reviews on Amazon.com but I tend to trust what you guys say more than some Joe Schmo on Amazon… Help a sista out!

You’ll be pining for a Garmin before you know it, but until then RunKeeper is a great app (and now free).  I can’t stand running with anything in my hands and the iphone doesn’t fare good tucked in a waist band, so I’ve given up on that as a GPS – but making sweet love to my Garmy in the sweaty way about 3x a week.  Lets do a 5k together when you get down to FL :)

Hell to the yeah we’ll do a 5k when I get down there. What do you think I’ve been researching all morning? Wishing I was going to be down in time to do Beach Palooza in St. Pete but I think we won’t be there in time.

And what Garmin model do you have? Of course I want one of these. ;)

Nice job!  I’m about 75% sure I will be doing my very first 5K next Saturday. Super nervous!

Go Sydney! BTW, sweet kicks!! I just bought a pair of Brooks Cascadia shoes for trail running in Portland <3 them!

When you learn to kick that little man (or woman) in your head’s ass on a long run (Fuck you very much, I’m going to die before I stop), you realize that you can pretty much dominate anything you set out to do. At least that’s been my experience.

Dude that’s awesome! You better let me know how it goes!

Thanks, Liz! I have been a Mizuno fan since I did track in high school but the Brooks are AMAZING!

Yeah, I think you’re right on that one. We’ll see how I feel in the morning. I don’t think I rushed it, but who knows? It felt great when I was done. (That’s what she said.)

I have the 306, but if you don’t care about heart rate, the 206 is the same minus that feature.  There are some new and fresh Garmins out there though so I’m not hip on the latest stuff.  Aaaand, if you are around here in March (which you will of course be, because of the Skydive Expo in April, duh), my running club is putting on a local half/5k event that will be nothing but fun. Special beer and everything :)   Plan on it… March 11th!

yeeeeeeehhh, good for you! (I get excited about this running stuff) Starting to run is one of the best things that ever happened to me. I have turned to it during some tough times in my life, and it continues to be the thing that I look to on good days and bad. Good luck in your 5k! It’s no skydiving, but crossing the finish line after a good race is an adrenaline rush nonetheless ;)

Sydney freaking Owen, I never thought the day would come. Next thing you know you’ll be running a half, it’s exactly what happened to me. Listen to Ratatat when you run, perfect beats to keep you on pace.

You know, I had been thinking about looking into 5ks to run in Chicago for the near future just the other day. And your post inspired me to do it, so I just signed up for the Bucktown 5k. :) Now onto training!

first 5K DONE! I really wanted to run the whole thing (on a treadmill I could do it, a little different on pavement) but I ended up walking a little bit but still felt great to cross that finish line!
