#ImAwesome: Patrick Johnson

February 11th, 2010 | 5 comments | Uncategorized

The #ImAwesome series was inspired by what I thought would be one giant post of awesomeness. Then, when more than three people responded to my tweet about what makes them awesome, a series was born. I’d like to take this time to thank Ed Cabellon for initiating the “#imawesome” tag in his response.

The motivation behind the question “what makes you awesome” is inspired by a game that I like to play with Mari when we don’t know anyone. In this game, you go around the table, room, bar, whatever, and you have two minutes to talk about who you are, what you do, and your greatest achievement. Full-frontal bragging time. Then I throw in my .02 at the end. You dig?

I’m here to shamelessly promote people that I think are doing some awesome things out there, or are just awesome in general. Hopefully you find a thing or two that’s entertaining, helpful, worthy of adding to your reader, or, best of all, mindcrush-worthy.

Today, I introduce you the second dose of awesomesauce, Patrick Johnson.

my favorite mentee

Who is he? Patrick is a junior at USF, studying at NYU this semester, because, well, he wanted to. He’s new to the social media scene but is super-pumped to meet anyone and everyone that he could potentially be friends with, collaborate with, or work with someday.

Patrick says: I’m patrick johnson. Lowercase cause I hate formality. I’m 21. I’m a Student at NYU/USF. Who am I, I’m #awesomesauce in its best flavor. (Sydney you can put it in capital letters if you want)

What does he do? “I learn everyday. I’m a professional student for the time being. I eat cookies all the time. I spend more time doing things I think will benefit my careeer than I do doing homework. But technically, I’m an intern at Factory PR, a fashion PR agency in NYC.”

Why is he Awesome?I think, I am awesome because I am doing what I want to do. I am living life to my own standards with advice and suggestions from others. I went to NYC on a whim. The money doesn’t matter, its what I’m getting out of life living in the greatest city in the world that means the most to me. It’s priceless. I am daring, funny, spontaneous, and more importantly, I’m curious. Success is not something that is an option for me. It will happen, in some form or another, and that doesn’t mean monetarily.”

Sydney says: I met Patrick when he was the only student to come up to me after a panel at USF and introduce himself. He’s like me when I go to any kind of networking event, be it a conference, party, whatever. As soon as we were done speaking, he marched up to the front of the classroom, introduced himself and the rest is history.

He gets it. He understands the importance of networking and that a lot of your success can depend on who you know. He’s not annoying either – he always shoots me an email or a text before he tries to call – because he’s aware that we both have very busy schedules.

Patrick is awesome because he’s doing something his peers aren’t. He’s taking that leap of faith hoping that 12k in private loans won’t bite him in the long run.

My shameless promo for Patrick – if you’re looking for a rockin’ intern this summer – let me know. Or let Patrick know. He’s ready to learn from the best of the best and has a good head on his shoulders. That’s my personal thumbs up.

Interested in being part of the #ImAwesome series? Shoot me an email (sydney.a.owen@gmail.com) with your name, what you do, why you’re awesome and a picture of your awesome self.

Good luck Patrick! I went through the lower case phase too, until I realized it wasn't formal but rather a means of communication.

Although I do know some very famous bloggers who've been lowercase-ing it for years and years, so what do I know.

That is a good way to put the lowercase phase into perspective. I'll have to think about it more now. I guess for me it has been more of a I'm-not-my-dad-thing.

Yep. Me too. My trajectory as a blogger started with no punctuation and no
article titles. I grew out of both and regret them, because the continuity
    suffers as a result.

The only currency in this crazy mixed up world is content.

I Definitely agree that Patrick is Awesome!! Its sooo true that networking is important, and some people, (Like Patrick!) just have the ability to naturally befriend everyone they meet whether its online or in real life.

Good luck and he sounds like a winner!
