#journchat on: Tips for the Almost-Grad

Nice to see you again. Follow me, @SydneyOwen. Thanks for being here!

Okay so this series has now extended into the realm of Twitter’s number one trending topic on Monday nights: #journchat. Founded by @PRSarahEvans, #journchat is a mix of journalists, PR pros, students, bloggers and whoever else wants to participate.

My question was featured in tonight’s session: “Question #6: What is 1 tip for college seniors about to graduate into PR/Journalism?”

Here are some responses:

KellyGroehler: I want to see applicants online – LinkedIn, at minimum.
apowerpoint: The purpose of a resume is simply to get you on the short list, not to get a job.
arikhanson: Good writers will always be in demand.
krisTK for entrylevel position, asked what happened to the people who used to do your job and how long they had it.
LOHADdotcom: You know what everyone else is doing? Don’t do that. Stand apart from the pack.
kristen_okla customize your resume/cover letter to the job.
stephaniethum Advice: Be unique. Be yourself. Don’t forget the staples of professional civility–please, thank you, sorry, excuse me, etc.
prnewswire Clean out, or up your privacy settings. Also, clean out goofy apps that may be inappropriate. “BE PROFESSIONAL”
bwdumars: Also invite professionals to your classes and clubs. They will be honored & will help you network
bwdumars Also ask how SM, PR & New Media Communications are integrated with oveall marketing strategy & plans.
arikhanson:  I told someone today that if I could only have one thing – experience or network – I’d take the network.
NicoleReid At interview ask as follow up how your role will help the company to achieve their business and communications objectives
earmstrong As my boss says – do your job like youre running your own business = be accountable, learn to learn and lead
prchicago One more thing: be enthusiastic! I can teach PR, but not enthusiasm.
prchicago: For PR grads –Be curious about everything. Research the media by reading extensively. Network!
eyecube – Build your social media profile to demonstrate how you can bring value to employer
journchat:  Network. Network. Network. Meet as many potential employers as possible. That’s how you find a PR job today.

For more results from my question, check it here. Have you ever participated in #journchat? If so, how has it helped you? If not, what are you waiting for? I’ve written about the benefits of this session before, and I think everyone interested in PR or media on any level should tune it and participate.
  • This is a great compilation of advice. The concept of journchat is new to me - but I am definitely interested - count me in for the next go around.

By the way, are you in the Chicago area? If so, what's the job market like there? Feel free to email me at mncheuvront [at] gmail [dot] com.

Love the blog! Keep doing what you do.
